MOSCOW — Aug. 21, 2026: Russia has signalled plans to expand economic cooperation with Myanmar, including potential projects involving a nuclear power plant, seaport and oil refinery, as President Vladimir Putin met Myanmar’s military leader Min Aung Hlaing in Moscow.

During their talks on Tuesday, Putin highlighted cooperation between the two countries in foreign policy, security and major joint economic projects, including plans for infrastructure and energy development in Myanmar, according to The Irrawaddy.

Russian Economic Development Minister Maxim Reshetnikov also said Moscow was ready to increase supplies of crude oil, agricultural fertiliser and machinery to Myanmar while expanding imports of agricultural and garment products from the Southeast Asian country.

The meeting comes as Moscow and Myanmar deepen economic and political ties following the military takeover in Myanmar in 2021.

For Min Aung Hlaing, the Moscow visit was his fifth overseas trip since he declared himself president in April, as his administration seeks greater international recognition and legitimacy.

The two countries have increasingly strengthened cooperation in areas including energy, trade, defence and technology, with Russia emerging as one of the Myanmar military government’s key international partners.

Min Aung Hlaing is also reportedly expected to visit Cambodia in early September, although the report did not provide further details on the planned visit.
