Songkran Violence: Pattaya Police Officer Accused in Fatal Shooting
PATTAYA, April 20, 2026 — A Thai police officer has been arrested after allegedly shooting dead a cannabis shop owner during Songkran celebrations on Pattaya Walking Street early Sunday, authorities said.
The shooting was reported at around 1:06 a.m. behind a cannabis shop in South Pattaya, a busy nightlife district in Chon Buri province.
Police and rescue workers found the victim, identified as 41-year-old Phattharathon, suffering from two gunshot wounds to the torso. Emergency responders performed CPR before taking him to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Authorities detained the suspected gunman at the scene, a 54-year-old sub-lieutenant assigned to Pattaya City’s investigative unit. Officers also seized a handgun and ammunition as evidence.
Witnesses told investigators the officer appeared heavily intoxicated and had allegedly brandished a firearm to threaten people nearby before firing shots into an entertainment venue. No injuries were initially reported.
The victim then reportedly approached the officer in an attempt to calm the situation and asked him to lower the weapon before being shot twice, witnesses said.
Investigators are collecting evidence, reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses as legal proceedings begin.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over public safety during Thailand’s Songkran holiday, when Pattaya draws large crowds of domestic and foreign tourists.
