UTHAI THANI, April 16, 2026 — Two teenagers have died after falling from the back of a pickup truck in Thailand’s Uthai Thani province while returning from Songkran celebrations, police said.

The crash occurred shortly after midnight on a local road in Thap Than district when a pickup carrying six youths lost control, causing three passengers in the rear tray to be thrown onto the road.

A 15-year-old girl, identified as Pavita Kamnoen, died at the scene, while a 13-year-old, identified only as Fiw, later died in hospital. One other passenger was injured, while two escaped unharmed.

Police said the vehicle, a Toyota pickup, was transporting the group along with sound equipment used during festival activities. Investigators suspect the driver may have been speeding or swerved to avoid an obstacle, while the tailgate was open.

Authorities noted that the driver and a front-seat passenger were not at the scene when emergency services arrived. Police are working to locate them for questioning.

The vehicle has been taken for examination as part of the ongoing investigation.

Officials said the incident marks the third fatality in Uthai Thani during the annual Songkran “seven dangerous days” road safety period, when accidents typically spike across the country.

The crash occurred just one kilometre from the victims’ homes, adding to the impact on the local community.
