Veerayooth Set to Replace Nattapong as People’s Party Leader
BANGKOK, April 16, 2026 — Thailand’s main opposition People’s Party is expected to appoint Veerayooth Kanchoochat as its new leader in a planned internal reshuffle later this month, according to a party source.
Current leader Nattapong Ruengpanyawut is widely expected to move into the role of secretary-general as the party reorganises following its recent election defeat.
The leadership changes are set to be formalised during a general caucus, as the reformist party seeks to stabilise its structure after losing to the Bhumjaithai Party in the February election, which saw Anutin Charnvirakul secure the premiership.
Other prominent figures, including Parit Wacharasindhu and Rukchanok Srinork, are also expected to join the party’s executive board as part of the reshuffle.
The move comes as the party faces mounting legal pressure. Nattapong and fellow MP Sirikanya Tansakul could be suspended from parliamentary duties if the Supreme Court accepts a case linked to alleged violations involving proposed amendments to Section 112 of Thailand’s Criminal Code.
Dozens of current and former lawmakers — including members of the dissolved Move Forward Party — are facing charges in the case, raising uncertainty over the opposition’s parliamentary strength.
Analysts say the reshuffle is aimed at maintaining continuity while redistributing leadership roles, as the party navigates both electoral setbacks and legal challenges.
The outcome of the planned leadership changes, as well as pending court decisions, is expected to shape the future direction of Thailand’s largest opposition bloc.
