Vietnam, Myanmar Expand Military Training and Security Cooperation
Top leader holds talks with Myanmar President in Hanoi
HANOI, Sept. 6, 2026 — Vietnam and Myanmar have agreed to strengthen defence and security cooperation and elevate the sector as a key pillar of their bilateral relationship, during Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing’s official visit to Hanoi.
Vietnamese leader To Lam hosted Min Aung Hlaing in Hanoi on Saturday, where the two sides agreed to expand cooperation in military training, exchanges between young officers, search-and-rescue operations and disaster response, according to the Vietnamese government. They also agreed to increase information sharing and coordination in combating various forms of crime.
The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment not to allow individuals or organisations to use the territory of either country for activities directed against the other. They also agreed to strengthen political trust through additional high-level exchanges and make more effective use of existing bilateral cooperation mechanisms.
Beyond defence and security, Vietnam and Myanmar agreed to deepen economic and trade cooperation, including in areas such as high-tech agriculture, food processing, telecommunications, information technology, digital transformation, energy and transport infrastructure.
Vietnam also expressed readiness to share its experience in national development, economic security and sustainable growth, while the two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation through ASEAN and Mekong subregional frameworks.
The visit marks Min Aung Hlaing’s first official visit to Vietnam since becoming Myanmar’s president. The two countries described the talks as an opportunity to strengthen political trust and advance their comprehensive cooperative partnership.
The visit comes as Min Aung Hlaing seeks greater regional engagement, with Reuters describing Vietnam as his seventh international destination since becoming president and part of efforts to strengthen Myanmar’s regional ties.
