Anwar Ibrahim Reaffirms Thailand–Cambodia Peace Process Is Self-Driven and Free from External Pressure
Kuala Lumpur, November 11, 2025 — The Prime Minister of Malaysia, H.E. Anwar Ibrahim, has reaffirmed that the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement between Thailand and Cambodia is being negotiated directly between the two governments, with Malaysia serving solely as a facilitator to support peaceful dialogue and regional stability.
In a video statement posted on his official Facebook page, Prime Minister Anwar expressed surprise over certain opposition figures who have attempted to politicize the peace process, raising the profile of a former general who has never won an election, in what he described as a vain attempt to undermine Malaysia’s constructive role in fostering regional peace.
“The conditions and essence of this agreement were entirely self-determined by Thailand and Cambodia, without any coercion,” the Prime Minister emphasized. “Malaysia merely acts as a facilitator.”
He further criticized his opposition parties for celebrating the suspension of the peace agreement, noting that such behavior disregards the risk of renewed conflict along the Cambodia–Thailand border.
“It is shocking that some would cheer when peace is at stake, simply to undermine the Government,” Prime Minister Anwar wrote, stressing that Malaysia remains steadfast in supporting diplomatic solutions and the spirit of ASEAN unity.
The Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement, signed on October 26, 2025, between the Prime Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia, was witnessed by U.S. President Donald J. Trump and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, in his capacity as Chair of ASEAN, marking a major regional effort to de-escalate tensions and promote lasting peace along the two countries’ shared border.
