Phnom Penh, 3 December 2025 — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFAIC) of the Kingdom of Cambodia has issued an official update regarding the ongoing detention of 18 Cambodian soldiers, who have now been held captive in Thailand for 127 days since their unlawful apprehension on 29 July 2025.

In its statement, the spokesperson of the MFAIC confirmed that the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) has been working “tirelessly through every possible diplomatic avenue” to secure the soldiers’ safe and unconditional release. Cambodian authorities have been engaging directly with Thailand, consulting with regional and international leaders, and coordinating closely with relevant international organizations regarding the situation.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which has been actively engaged since the beginning of the incident, has been playing a key role in ensuring that the detained soldiers are treated in full accordance with International Humanitarian Law. The ICRC has also been in regular communication with the soldiers’ families and has expressed readiness to support any future steps toward their repatriation.

The MFAIC emphasized that securing the safe release of the 18 soldiers “remains our highest priority.” The statement also conveyed the RGC’s deep appreciation to all international actors who have supported Cambodia’s call for the soldiers’ prompt and unconditional release — including leaders, international organizations, civil society groups, and individuals worldwide.

The ministry highlighted that such support is in line with the commitments made under the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration of 26 October 2025, which calls for the protection of human rights, adherence to international humanitarian principles, and the peaceful resolution of bilateral issues.

As the situation enters its fifth month, Cambodia continues to urge Thailand to comply with international law and uphold its humanitarian obligations, while reaffirming its own commitment to diplomatic efforts aimed at ensuring the soldiers’ safe return.
