Naypyidaw, 28 December 2025 — Myanmar has commenced its nationwide general election for the first time in five years, following the military takeover, according to a report by AFP on Sunday, 28 December 2025.

Senior military leader and head of state Min Aung Hlaing described the election as “free and fair,” despite being organized under the military regime that seized power in February 2021. Speaking to reporters after casting his vote in the capital Naypyidaw, Min Aung Hlaing stated, “We ensure that this will be a free and fair election, even though it is organized by the military.”

The election on Sunday marks the first phase, with the second phase scheduled for 11 January 2026, and the third and final phase planned for 25 January 2026. Official dates for vote counting and announcement of results have not yet been confirmed.

International democracy observers have criticized the election, asserting that it primarily serves as a mechanism for the military to legally consolidate power. The voting is taking place amid ongoing civil conflict, with significant portions of the country under the control of armed opposition groups that have vowed to obstruct the election in their areas.

The developments have raised concerns over the legitimacy of the electoral process and the humanitarian impact on civilians caught in conflict zones.
