Phnom Penh, 6 January 2026 — In the wake of a border incident earlier today in Preah Vihear Province, China has reaffirmed its strong support for the continued implementation of the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, calling on both countries to strengthen dialogue, uphold restraint, and work jointly toward lasting peace and stability.

According to H.E. Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, Spokeswoman of the Ministry of National Defence of the Kingdom of Cambodia, at approximately 7:27 a.m., Cambodian forces were conducting routine organization and orderliness arrangements at their stationed area within Cambodia’s sovereign territory when an explosion occurred originating from a nearby pile of garbage. The incident resulted in one minor injury and one serious injury among Cambodian personnel. Both injured soldiers were promptly evacuated and transported to hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.

Responding to the situation, China, as a close friend and neighboring country to both Cambodia and Thailand, stated that it is heartened by the continued implementation of the ceasefire and by the safe return of 18 Cambodian soldiers to their country. China expressed hope that both sides will continue to look ahead, enhance communication and coordination, and jointly ensure a full and lasting ceasefire, while gradually rebuilding mutual trust and improving bilateral relations.

China emphasized that sustained peace and dialogue serve the fundamental and long-term interests of both the Cambodian and Thai peoples, and reflect the shared expectations of the international community for stability in the region.

China further reaffirmed its commitment to continuing the implementation of the Global Security Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping, and to following the direction agreed upon by Cambodia, Thailand, and China at the Fuxian Meeting. Beijing underscored its readiness to actively facilitate, in an “Asian way,” efforts by the two countries to consolidate the ceasefire, improve relations, and prevent further escalation.

China concluded by reiterating its willingness to make constructive contributions to regional peace and stability and to the building of a community with a shared future with neighboring countries, underscoring the importance of dialogue, restraint, and cooperation in addressing border-related challenges.
