Cambodia, Japan unveil plan to turn Sihanoukville into regional port hub
PHNOM PENH, Jan. 30, 2026 — Cambodia and Japan have agreed on four key initiatives under a new master plan to develop the Port of Sihanoukville into a regional port and logistics hub, Cambodian officials said on Friday.
The agreement includes drafting a long-term vision for a regional port and logistics centre, preparing a 24-month action plan for project implementation, setting up a joint working group to coordinate execution, and organising outreach consultations and training programmes.
Officials said the master plan aims to improve connectivity, strengthen competitiveness in Cambodia’s transport and logistics sector, and deepen the country’s integration into regional and global supply chains.
The initiative also underscores long-standing cooperation between Cambodia and Japan, which have maintained diplomatic relations for more than seven decades.
