PHNOM PENH, April 30, 2026 — Cambodia’s national police have rejected reports in Thai media alleging that Thai nationals were unlawfully detained during a recent crackdown on online scam operations in the border city of Poipet.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Cambodian National Police said the claims were “false and unfounded,” stressing that the operation targeted transnational cybercrime networks and was conducted in accordance with Cambodian law.

Authorities said a total of 635 Thai nationals were detained during the raid on a 13-storey building in Banteay Meanchey province, where illegal online scam and gambling activities were uncovered.

Police said there was no intention to detain or mistreat the individuals, adding that the operation was carried out with respect for humanitarian principles and in close coordination with Thai authorities.

All individuals were processed and deported to Thailand “safely and with dignity,” the statement said, while an additional 30 suspects remain under investigation for further legal proceedings.

The police also criticised what they described as misleading reporting, warning that such claims could damage public understanding and undermine bilateral cooperation in combating transnational crime.

Cambodian authorities reiterated their commitment to working with regional partners to tackle cybercrime and protect citizens from technology-based offences, while urging media outlets to verify information before publication.
