BANGKOK, April 1, 2026 — Thai authorities have issued a warning to air passengers after a surge in credit card thefts on international flights, with reported losses exceeding 8 million baht.

According to Immigration Bureau Thailand, more than 80 cases have been recorded, many occurring on short-haul international routes of less than three hours.

Officials said suspects typically target passengers’ luggage stored in overhead compartments, especially bags not placed directly above their owners. Cards are often stolen while passengers are asleep or distracted and used shortly after landing before victims become aware.

“Criminals take advantage of moments when passengers lower their guard,” said Phongthorn Phongrattanant, a deputy commander and spokesperson of Immigration Division 2.

Authorities are now working with the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand and airlines to enhance onboard monitoring and increase passenger awareness.

The rise in incidents highlights growing concerns over in-flight security, particularly on regional routes where passengers may be less vigilant.

Consumer groups also warned that organized theft rings may be involved, with stolen cards quickly used for transactions immediately after arrival.

Passenger Safety Advice

Officials and fraud prevention experts urge travelers to:

  • Keep credit cards and valuables on their person at all times
  • Avoid placing important items in overhead compartments
  • Enable real-time transaction alerts via mobile banking apps
  • Use security features such as temporary card blocking and spending limits

Authorities said increased vigilance from passengers remains key to preventing further losses.
