PHNOM PENH, April 6, 2026 — Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet has urged citizens to prioritise locally made products over imports, framing domestic consumption as both an economic strategy and a reflection of national pride.

In a message marking Cambodia’s National Day for Promoting the Use of Khmer Products on April 9, Hun Manet said supporting local goods not only benefits Cambodian producers but also demonstrates recognition of the value created by local skills and knowledge.

“Using domestic products is not only about supporting local producers, but also about expressing national pride and understanding the value of what Cambodians create,” he said.

The prime minister noted growing public confidence in locally made goods, which he said are increasingly meeting domestic demand and gaining wider acceptance across the country.

His remarks come amid broader economic challenges, including global economic uncertainty and regional tensions, which he said underscore the importance of stability and self-reliance.

Hun Manet also highlighted Cambodia’s “One Village, One Product” policy as a key driver of rural development, job creation and value-added production, particularly in local communities.

The initiative aims to transform locally sourced raw materials into commercial goods, while preserving cultural traditions and strengthening community-based enterprises.

Cambodia has been working to boost domestic production capacity and reduce reliance on imports, as part of efforts to enhance economic resilience and safeguard long-term growth.

Officials said promoting local products also supports cultural identity and sustainable development, while helping communities build competitiveness and innovation.

The government has designated April 9 as an annual national day to encourage wider use of Cambodian-made products under the theme “Khmer Products, Khmer Use, Khmer Progress.”
