PHNOM PENH, April 11, 2026 — Cambodia will not abandon its territorial claims despite taking temporary measures to support affected communities, Prime Minister Hun Manet said on Saturday, as he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resolving border issues through diplomacy.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the second phase of the Funan Techo Canal project, Hun Manet said that while the government may build temporary housing for citizens in disputed or affected areas, Cambodia would not relinquish its claims over the land.

He stressed that diplomatic channels remain the preferred path for resolving border disputes, adding that even if there is “only a one percent chance” of success, Cambodia will continue to pursue peaceful negotiations.

The prime minister said the government is determined to avoid further conflict, underscoring that it does not want to see any renewed bloodshed.

Cambodia has in recent months reiterated its position on safeguarding territorial integrity while engaging neighboring countries through established diplomatic mechanisms.

Hun Manet’s remarks come amid ongoing sensitivities surrounding border issues in the region, where both sides have emphasized dialogue and stability as key priorities.
