No Cambodian Request on Border Reopening, Position Unchanged
BANGKOK, April 14, 2026 — Cambodia has not made any formal request to Thailand to reopen border checkpoints, officials have reiterated, as statements from Thai authorities prompted renewed attention to the issue.
The Royal Thai Navy said it had not received any official proposal from Cambodia regarding the reopening of checkpoints in Chanthaburi and Trat provinces, adding that any decision would follow standard procedures and security assessments.
However, Cambodian officials have consistently maintained that Phnom Penh has not sought the reopening of border crossings, despite recurring claims circulating in Thai media and online platforms.
Cambodia’s position aligns with previous government statements emphasizing that border-related matters should be addressed through established bilateral mechanisms rather than public pressure or misinformation.
Thai authorities said discussions on the issue remain at a local level and have not yet reached formal decision-making channels, noting that any proposal would need to go through multiple stages before approval.
The Royal Thai Navy said reopening decisions would prioritise national security and require comprehensive evaluation.
Observers say the differing narratives highlight ongoing sensitivities in Cambodia–Thailand border relations, where information surrounding border policy can quickly become politicised.
Cambodia has repeatedly stressed the importance of accurate information and constructive dialogue, while reaffirming that it has not requested Thailand to reopen border checkpoints.
The situation remains stable, with no immediate changes expected as both sides continue to manage border issues through existing frameworks.
