BANGKOK, May 4, 2026 — Thai authorities have launched disciplinary and legal action against officials at Bangkok Remand Prison over a bribery scandal involving preferential treatment for inmates, the Department of Corrections (DoC) said.

The Justice Ministry has suspended the prison commander and his secretary pending an investigation into allegations they accepted bribes in exchange for allowing violations of prison rules, including the use of mobile phones and unauthorised visits.

The case has been referred to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) for further legal proceedings, with officials warning that no misconduct will be overlooked.

Preliminary findings suggest that some prison staff facilitated special privileges for selected detainees, including Chinese nationals, in return for financial or other benefits. Authorities are also examining claims that unauthorised lawyer visits were arranged through informal channels.

Thailand’s National Human Rights Commission raised concerns that such practices amount to discrimination against other inmates and reflect deeper systemic weaknesses in prison oversight.

All implicated officials remain suspended while investigations continue. The outcome of the NACC probe could lead to criminal charges and broader reforms within Thailand’s corrections system, officials said.

The scandal has renewed scrutiny over transparency and accountability in the country’s prison administration, with authorities under pressure to tighten controls and prevent similar abuses in the future.
