BANGKOK, May 11, 2026 — Thai police have arrested nine people in connection with an African ivory smuggling operation after coordinated raids across seven provinces led to the seizure of about 250 kilograms of illegal ivory, authorities said.

The operation was carried out by Thailand’s Central Investigation Bureau under the direction of Nathasak Chaowanasai.

Police said the trafficking network operated through a Facebook group called “Khiaw Nga Khrueang Rang Chak Sat,” which allegedly advertised and sold ivory products online.

Authorities said investigations revealed the ivory was smuggled from Africa to Vietnam by sea before being transported illegally across the Mekong River into Thailand.

Once inside Thailand, the ivory was reportedly processed into products including prayer beads, knife handles and decorative items.

Investigators estimated the operation generated around 10 million baht ($270,000) in sales over the past year.

Simultaneous sting operations conducted on May 7 resulted in the arrest of nine suspects and the confiscation of ivory products as well as tools allegedly used in manufacturing.

Sadudee Punpugdee from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation said possession of African ivory is prohibited under Thai law.

Authorities said the seized ivory would be destroyed after legal proceedings are completed.

Thai investigators are continuing efforts to identify and apprehend Vietnamese nationals believed to be involved in the cross-border smuggling network.
