BANGKOK, June 16, 2026 — Thailand’s shrimp industry is facing growing uncertainty after Malaysia imposed a temporary ban on imports of five types of Thai shrimp, disrupting a key export market and raising concerns among farmers and exporters in southern Thailand.

The dispute stems from Thailand’s decision last month to tighten restrictions on imports of Malaysian sea bass over concerns about chemical residues. In response, Malaysian authorities introduced a temporary suspension on selected shrimp imports from Thailand, citing food safety controls.

The move has created immediate challenges for Thai exporters, particularly in southern provinces where Malaysia serves as a major and convenient export destination due to its proximity and cross-border transport links.

Exporters in Songkhla province said some Malaysian buyers have already delayed or suspended orders while awaiting clarity on the situation. The uncertainty has increased storage and inventory costs for businesses that depend heavily on the neighboring market.

Industry operators noted that replacing the Malaysian market is not a simple task. Alternative destinations often require different product specifications, regulatory approvals and buyer standards, making it difficult to redirect shipments on short notice.

The disruption comes at a sensitive time for Thailand’s seafood sector, which has already been facing rising production costs and intense competition in international markets.

While both governments have framed their measures as food safety-related actions, the reciprocal restrictions have heightened concerns among traders that the dispute could have broader implications for agricultural and seafood commerce between the two countries.

Industry representatives are hoping for negotiations to resolve the issue quickly, warning that prolonged restrictions could further impact exporters, processors and shrimp farmers who rely on stable demand from Malaysia. Reuters reported that uncertainty over future orders remains the most immediate concern for businesses affected by the ban.
