NAKHON PHANOM, October 12, 2026 — A 69-year-old American man was killed after an ice delivery truck struck his motorcycle from behind on the Nakhon Phanom–Tha Uthen bypass road on Monday, police said.

The victim, identified only as Daniel, was found dead beneath a white Toyota truck carrying an enclosed cargo compartment for ice deliveries. Police are reviewing CCTV footage and conducting further inquiries to establish the exact circumstances of the fatal crash.

Motorcycle found overturned near truck

Muang Nakhon Phanom police were called to the bypass road leading into the city on October 12.

Officers found Daniel’s overturned Honda motorcycle near the truck. The motorcycle’s rear section was damaged, and its rear wheel was bent out of shape. The truck had also struck a streetlight pole.

The driver, identified as 47-year-old Lamphorn Chanjumpum, a local resident, remained at the scene and gave a statement to police.

Preliminary findings indicate that Daniel had recently left Big C Nakhon Phanom shopping centre and was believed to have been travelling home to Chom Khong village.

Police investigate suspected speeding

Police suspect the truck may have been travelling at high speed and failed to stop before colliding with the motorcycle from behind.

The impact reportedly caused the motorcycle to lose balance, while the truck continued forward and struck the streetlight pole. Daniel became trapped beneath the front of the truck and died at the scene.

Investigators are examining CCTV footage from nearby locations to help establish how the collision occurred and determine responsibility.

Police also said they would notify the US Embassy following the death of the American citizen.

Wife describes his life in Nakhon Phanom

Following the crash, a female Immigration Bureau police officer arrived at the scene and identified herself as Daniel’s wife.

She told police that the couple had lived together for several years and that Daniel had chosen to remain in Nakhon Phanom because he enjoyed the local atmosphere.

Despite owning a car, he regularly rode his motorcycle to Big C to buy food, a routine he had followed before the fatal collision.

The investigation remains ongoing, with police awaiting further findings from the CCTV review and other inquiries.
