British Couple Detained in Turkey Over Alleged Cannabis Smuggling From Thailand
ISTANBUL, May 6, 2026 — A young British couple face up to 30 years in prison in Turkey after being arrested at Istanbul Airport on suspicion of attempting to smuggle cannabis from Thailand to the United Kingdom, British media reported.
Holly Cooper and Taylor Johnson, both aged 20, were detained on April 26 after arriving in Istanbul from Thailand while attempting to board a connecting flight to London.
Turkish authorities reportedly stopped the pair for questioning before arresting them over suitcases allegedly containing cannabis.
Following a court hearing, the couple were formally remanded into custody and transferred to a local prison, where they could remain for up to a year before trial under Turkey’s judicial process.
According to family friends quoted by British newspapers, the pair may have been recruited by organised criminal groups while travelling in Spain’s Canary Islands and were allegedly manipulated into acting as drug couriers.
“They’ve been recruited and groomed by bigger criminals and exploited by them,” a family friend told The Sun, describing the couple as “good kids” who had made a serious mistake.
British media also reported claims from relatives that Johnson was assaulted while being held in an overcrowded detention facility following the arrest.
The couple currently do not have private legal representation and are expected to be assigned public defenders.
Friends have launched an online fundraising campaign to help cover legal expenses, although contributions remained limited in the initial days following the arrests.
The UK Foreign Office confirmed it was providing consular assistance to two British nationals detained in Turkey and was in contact with their families.
Under Turkish narcotics laws, those convicted of international drug trafficking offences can face prison sentences ranging from a minimum of 10 years to as much as 30 years.
The case has renewed attention on the growing use of Southeast Asian travel routes by international drug trafficking networks targeting Europe and other destinations.
