Jakarta Arrests Senior Lawmaker 6 Days After Swearing-In
JAKARTA, April 18, 2026 — Indonesian authorities have arrested a senior lawmaker on bribery charges just days after he assumed office, in a case that underscores the country’s ongoing anti-corruption efforts.
Prosecutors detained Hery Susanto on Thursday, accusing him of accepting payments from a domestic nickel company in exchange for manipulating regulatory outcomes.
The arrest came only six days after he was sworn in as a parliamentary leader on April 10.
According to investigators, Susanto allegedly received around 1.5 billion rupiah (about $87,000) during his tenure as a board member linked to the Indonesian House of Representatives between 2021 and 2026.
Authorities said the payments were tied to efforts to alter penalty calculations for a nickel company identified as TSHI, including the use of falsified documents to reduce fines.
“The suspect is alleged to have abused his position to benefit a private company,” an official from the Attorney General’s Office said.
Susanto faces charges under Indonesia’s anti-corruption laws, which carry a maximum prison sentence of up to three years if convicted.
The case follows his recent appointment by President Prabowo Subianto and is expected to intensify scrutiny over governance and accountability within Indonesia’s political system.
Authorities said investigations are ongoing and could expand to include other individuals or entities linked to the case.
