PHUKET, April 17, 2026 — Authorities in Phuket are facing mounting pressure to tighten control over tourist behaviour after a group of foreign nationals were arrested for aggressive conduct during Songkran celebrations, police said.

The suspects were detained on April 14 in the Patong area and charged with causing a public nuisance and obstructing traffic following incidents that were widely shared on social media.

Video footage showed the group blocking roads, harassing motorists and engaging in disruptive actions, including forcing open a van door to throw water inside.

Other clips circulating online appeared to show a woman on a motorcycle being splashed with water and having substances poured on her without consent, prompting public outrage.

Police said the suspects could face penalties of up to three months in prison and fines of up to 10,000 baht if convicted.

The incident has triggered broader concerns about inappropriate behaviour by some tourists during Thailand’s annual Songkran festival, one of the country’s most popular cultural events.

Local residents and online commentators have called for stricter enforcement of laws and, in some cases, deportation of offenders, warning that such incidents could damage Thailand’s reputation as a global tourism destination.

Officials said they would continue monitoring festival activities and take action against behaviour that violates public order or local laws.
