Woman Claims Date Rape Drug Exposure at Bangkok Songkran Party
BANGKOK, April 17, 2026 — A Thai woman has alleged she was exposed to a so-called “date rape drug” during a Songkran celebration in Bangkok, raising concerns over safety at crowded festival venues.
The woman said she lost consciousness after attending an event at a popular nightlife venue, adding that a medical test later confirmed the presence of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) in her system.
In posts shared on social media, she said she began experiencing symptoms including dizziness, seizures and confusion shortly after arriving at the venue, before being taken to hospital.
The woman said she had not accepted drinks from strangers and believed the substance may have entered her body through water sprayed into her face during the festival, though she acknowledged she could not confirm the exact source.
GHB is a depressant that can cause drowsiness, unconsciousness and memory loss, and has been linked to criminal misuse in some cases.
Her account has sparked mixed reactions online, with some questioning how the drug could have been administered in such a manner, while others called for a formal investigation.
The woman later shared a medical certificate online, which she said confirmed the presence of GHB, and stated that her condition had stabilised.
Authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the case. Online users have urged relevant agencies to investigate the incident, identify any potential suspects and strengthen safety measures at public events.
The case comes amid heightened scrutiny of safety during Songkran festivities, which draw large crowds each year across Thailand.
