Thailand Ranks Highest in Southeast Asia for HIV Rate
BANGKOK, April 7, 2026 — Thailand has the highest HIV prevalence rate in Southeast Asia, according to the latest available data compiled from United Nations sources.
The data shows Thailand with an estimated 580,000 people living with HIV, equivalent to about 8.09 cases per 1,000 people — the highest rate in the region.
Myanmar ranked second with 5.17 per 1,000 people, followed by Cambodia at 4.36, placing it third among Southeast Asian countries.
Other countries reported lower prevalence rates, including Vietnam at 2.49, Malaysia at 2.42 and Indonesia at 2.03 per 1,000 people. The Philippines, Singapore and Timor-Leste recorded lower levels, while no data was available for Laos and Brunei.
Across the region, governments and international organisations continue efforts to curb HIV transmission through awareness campaigns, testing, and treatment initiatives.
The data highlights ongoing public health challenges in Southeast Asia, where disparities in healthcare access and prevention strategies continue to shape HIV outcomes.
