Cambodia Formally Protests Alleged Thai Military Incursions
PHNOM PENH, 20 June 2026 — Cambodia has issued a formal diplomatic protest against Thailand, accusing Thai armed forces of carrying out a series of actions that violate Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The protest was announced in a press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on Friday.
According to the statement, Cambodia alleges that on 17 June, Thai troops raised Thai national flags inside Cambodian territory near the Thmor Da International Border Checkpoint in Pursat Province, deliberately set fire to a warehouse at the Royal O Smach Hotel and Resort in Oddar Meanchey Province, and constructed concrete fences near Ta Krabey Temple.
Phnom Penh described the actions as unilateral measures that violate Cambodia’s internationally recognized borders and contravene both the 1904 Franco-Siamese Convention, the 1907 Treaty, and Article 5 of the 2000 Cambodia–Thailand Memorandum of Understanding on Boundary Survey and Demarcation.
Cambodia stressed that it does not recognize any boundary line established through force or unilateral action, insisting that the alleged activities do not affect its legal position regarding the international border. The government called on Thailand to immediately cease all unilateral actions, de-escalate tensions, and resolve outstanding border issues peacefully through international law and existing bilateral agreements, while reaffirming Cambodia’s commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and good neighbourly relations along the Cambodia–Thailand border.
