Chinese Gang Arrested in Thailand for Fake Kidnap Extortion
BANGKOK, April 17, 2026 — Thai police have arrested four Chinese nationals accused of staging a fake kidnapping in a bid to extort money from the victim’s family, authorities said.
The suspects were detained in Samut Prakan province following a joint investigation by the Crime Suppression Division and immigration officials.
Police said the group orchestrated the staged abduction of a 19-year-old woman, identified as Ms. Tong, and sent video clips showing her being assaulted to her father in China to demand ransom.
Believing his daughter had been kidnapped and taken to Myanmar, the father transferred about 110,000 yuan (approximately 550,000 baht), officials said.
Investigators later traced the footage to locations in Bangkok, where the woman had been staying before moving with the group to a rented house in Bang Phli district.
Authorities found six Chinese nationals at the property. Four were arrested, including a man identified as the victim’s boyfriend, who allegedly masterminded the scheme and later confessed.
Police said the suspects face charges including illegal entry, with deportation proceedings expected. Two other individuals found at the scene were not detained as they were legally in the country.
The case highlights ongoing concerns over transnational scam operations in Southeast Asia, where criminal networks have increasingly used deception and digital tools to target victims across borders.
