Thai Lawmaker Says Losing Free Meals Is an ‘Insult’ to Senators
BANGKOK, April 22, 2026 — A Thai senator has drawn criticism after saying the cancellation of free meals in parliament was an “insult” to senators’ honour, reigniting debate over public spending and privileges for lawmakers.
The controversy follows a March 15 parliamentary decision to end complimentary meals for members after public criticism over the use of taxpayer money. Members of the House of Representatives, who earn salaries exceeding 100,000 baht per month, began paying for their own lunches after the Songkran holiday.
During a Senate meeting on Monday, Prathum Wongsawat objected to extending the policy to senators, saying the issue was not financial but one of dignity.
“It’s not about the money, but honour,” she said during the session. “I’m capable of taking care of myself, but this matter concerns the honour of being a senator.”
Her remarks quickly triggered backlash on Thai social media, where users questioned the connection between public service and free meals.

Some online comments said a senator’s honour should be measured by work performance rather than benefits, while others mocked the idea that complimentary food was tied to prestige.
The Senate has not yet reached a final decision on whether senators will also have to pay for meals.
Wuttichat Kalyanamit proposed deducting 10,000 baht from senators’ monthly allowances to cover meal costs, while Deputy Senate President Boonsong Noisophon said the issue would be raised again at a future meeting.
The debate comes amid broader scrutiny of state spending and calls for fiscal reform in Thailand.
Separately, a Senate committee recently floated a proposal to raise value-added tax from 7% to 10%, though government spokeswoman Ratchada Thanadirek said there were no plans to increase VAT and that authorities remained focused on easing living costs.
The meal dispute has become the latest flashpoint over privileges for elected and appointed officials at a time when many Thais face economic pressure.
